From Vision to Reality: The Unconventional Journey of our First Watch Design

When we decided to build LIV, we had a clear vision–let's create a brand that would do everything differently. We wanted to do everything the legacy brands wouldn't dare to do. So, our first challenge was the design. I had a vision of what I wanted the watch to look like, but the problem was that I'm not a watch designer.

Who will the watch designer be?

Our goal was first to find and then hire a designer that would sit with me for months or maybe years trying to come up with that perfect design for the first LIV watch.

But could that designer actually create something I had envisioned and described? Even if I lay out my idea with precise detail, would that translate to the perfect first LIV watch? To me, that sounded really old-school and NOT very efficient.

So, sticking to the theme that LIV must do things differently, we sat around for two weeks and banged our heads together until we came up with something so unique that no other brand has EVER done–let's do a design challenge!

The LIV Design Challenge

Yes, it's precisely what it sounds like. We would invite some of the world's best designers to join the LIV Design Challenge, to develop our maiden design concept.

Close to 200 designers took the challenge! It was crazy. The entire contest lasted six months. In fact, there were so many great designs that we increased the number of winners from three to six until we finally decided on the winning watch, the Genesis GX1 1/10th of a second Swiss chronograph.

The Big Launch

Three months later, we took our concept to Kickstarter to prove that we had a winner, and the response was overwhelming (in a perfect way)! Watch lovers went wild, and the GX1 sold out in just 48 hours! By 2016 we had sold our first 1000 pieces.

Eight years later and a few design improvements based on fan feedback, the GX1 is still our #1 bestseller! We've since launched a wide selection of GX1 colorways as well as custom silicone strap options that offer a bold and unique look for every watch enthusiast.
