Glucydur Balance Wheel: All You Need to Know
Our 7750 beats with a Glucydur balance wheel, a hardened beryllium alloy that resists temperature changes, magnetism and corrosion. It holds its shape and poise for years, so your chronograph stays accurate on the wrist, in the cold, and over the long haul.

What the balance wheel does
The balance wheel is the heartbeat of a mechanical watch. It swings back and forth on a hairspring thinner than a human hair, and every swing releases the gear train by one precise step. How steadily it swings decides how well your watch keeps time.
Why Glucydur matters
-
Steady in any temperature
Glucydur barely expands with heat. Paired with a self-compensating hairspring, your watch keeps the same rate on a cold morning and on a warm wrist.
-
Holds its shape
It is far harder than a standard brass balance, so it resists bending from knocks and handling and keeps time the same way for years.
-
Poised with precision
A balance has to be perfectly weighted around its axis. Those tiny holes in the rim are where it was fine-tuned, and Glucydur's hardness keeps it that way.
-
No magnetism, no rust
The alloy won't magnetize or oxidize, so neither one can throw off the rate.
Glucydur vs. a standard balance
| Feature | Glucydur | Standard |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Beryllium bronze (copper, beryllium, iron) | Nickel-plated brass |
| Heat and cold | Very low expansion, steady rate | Expands more, rate drifts more |
| Hardness | Hard, keeps its shape after shocks | Softer, can deform over time |
| Poise | Stays in poise for years | Can drift out of poise |
| Corrosion | Resists oxidation through the whole alloy | Protected only by its plating |
| Used in | 7750 Top and Chronometer grades | 7750 Standard and Elaboré grades |
