Gravel 001 - open case-back
I stumbled on this watch while searching for photos of Steve McQueen racing and ended up discovering LIV’s Gravel 002 McQueen GT40 watch. The blue and orange colorway really pops, and the floating indices on the dial are a cool detail. It’s super lightweight and very comfortable to wear. As a bonus, the colors happen to match the Fighting Illini here at the University of Illinois, where I live. I am absolutely obsessed with the GRAVEL 002 McQueen GT40. This is now my fourth LIV watch and my third from the Gravel 002 line, so I’m well past the 'honeymoon phase' with this brand—I know exactly what they deliver. The homage to the legendary Ford GT40 is visually stunning; that Gulf livery powder blue and orange is perfectly saturated. Some people nitpick the brightness of the night visibility, but they fail to realize that over-luming the hands would muddy the 'Gulf Blue' aesthetic that makes the watch special. It’s a deliberate design choice that preserves the integrity of that iconic racing colorway.
What really separates this from the pack, however, is what most casual reviewers miss: the engineering of the Dense Carbon case. A lot of people pick this watch up and mistake the 62g lightness for fragility, thinking it’s just 'plastic.' They couldn't be more wrong. Having owned three of these, I can tell you that this composite material is virtually indestructible. It doesn't get cold on your wrist like steel, and it absorbs impacts that would shatter a lesser watch. This is a true grab-and-go tool watch built for high-vibration environments where an automatic rotor would be a liability, and it’s rare to find a piece that honors racing heritage this well while actually being tough enough to survive a pit lane.
